Michel Bourez suffered a horrendous wipeout at massive Teahupoo a few days ago that broke his hand and a vertebra. The injury forced him to withdraw from the upcoming Oi Rio Pro, where he is the defending champion.

The broken hand required immediate surgery, and he’ll be out of the water for at least six weeks. “It is terrible to hear the news of Michel’s injury,” said WSL Commissioner Kieren Perrow. “He is the defending event champion and will be missed at this years Oi Rio Pro. We wish him a swift recovery in time for the next stop in Fiji.”
