Editor’s Note: #My5Lineups is a new series highlighting five of a featured photographer’s favorite lineup shots. The fifteenth in the series is veteran photographer from Hawaii, DoomaPhotos.
The island of Maui is a special place. I have been lucky to live here as a photographer for 21 years now; proud to say I started photography in the film days and will never stop appreciating or take for granted all the beauty Maui has to offer.
Maui gets blocked from a lot of swells by the island of Molokai. On Oahu, it could be 10 ft and Maui is 1 ft. I would say Maui has many world class quality waves along with the world’s best big wave at Pe’ahi (aka Jaws). Some spots only happen a few times a year; sometimes they don’t happen for several years. It’s been five plus years since Maalaea has done her thing and when these special waves have their moment, good luck getting one from the boys.
Looking forward to seeing what this year’s El Niño winter has in store for Hawai’i. Can’t wait to see Pe’ahi big and glassy and watch someone paddle-in to the biggest wave ever…
