The Inertia

Though it was barely a month ago, the WSL finals already feel like a distant memory. In case you forgot (or just weren’t paying attention) at the beginning of September, in the midst of a scorching Southern California heat wave, John John Florence and Caity Simmers secured their places in surfing history by clinching world titles in the storied lineup of Lower Trestles. Now, courtesy of John John’s younger brother Nathan Florence, we have another behind the scenes look at what it was like behind the scenes on finals day

Before diving into the video, Nathan took a second to say why, out of all of John John’s wins, this one was special. “Probably one of the most proud days I’ve had,” he explained. “He’s had three of these big title wins, and they’re all special in their own way, but it just felt like this year, having a full healthy year with no injuries [and] on top of it all, we’re running our own company, wearing our own gear. He’s got Florence on the back of his jersey, there’s a big crowd of people on the beach, all wearing Florence, screaming their heads off. [It was] very very special.”
