The Inertia

There’s been a south swell rolling in and all the usual suspects are lighting up. We recently saw footage of a clean summer session at The Wedge, and now Nathan Florence has reported back from Puerto Escondido.

The footage came in the form of a vlog on the prolific slab-hound’s YouTube channel. The whole edit has Florence’s characteristic, laid-back demeanor in the midst of genuinely gnarly conditions, but one moment stands out: a beatdown that would have laid low most amateurs.

“Just put in some more endurance training. Got super worked,” he described in a breakdown afterwards. “Went on this big right that was just too deep and the barrel was so square it just absolutely exploded me. I flew in the barrel and landed on water that felt like concrete. I didn’t hit the sand, I just landed on my abdomen on hard water. It was like a stinger. My whole core seized up, like when you get the breath knocked out of you. My guts are still wrecked from it. The rest of the day has just been an uncomfortable feeling in my organs.”

To add insult to injury, he also buckled his board in the process. Guess it was worth it. For us, at least.
