The sight of a shark in the water can strike fear into the heart of any waterman, but sometimes it’s actually just a new friend. Globe trotting freesurfer Nathan Florence had just that experience on a trip to Puerto Escondido, as he recounted in a recent Instagram post.
“Incredible little encounter right in the line up of Puerto Escondido,” wrote Florence in the caption. “As I was filming, talking about the efforts in Puerto to get some bathymetry studies funded, so that they can protect and preserve their epic coastline, a whale shark nosed right up to me! Scared me at first. I thought it was a big great white shark (too many YouTube documentaries) and was so blessed to see the spots and realize it was a whale shark! What a blessing!”
As he mentioned in the video, local surfers in Puerto Escondido are seeking USD $17,000 to fund a study on the bathymetry of Playa Zicatela. On Wednesday, Florence became the fundraiser’s biggest donor with a donation of over $1,000.
