Surfing can be a source of joy, as well as a balm against the pain of loss. In Waves, a Netflix film that just released a new trailer ahead of its upcoming release, explores both.

‘Set against the sun-soaked surf culture of Southern California, In Waves, based on a true story, explores the joy of finding your soulmate, the courage it takes to live life to the fullest, and the enduring power of love to shape who we become and what we leave behind,” reads the official synopsis.

The feature is based on the 2019 comic of the same name, in which author and illustrator AJ dungo tells a story that is part autobiography, part surfing history. A love story between AJ and Kristen, a confident, outgoing surfer with a deep connection to the ocean, is interspersed with flashbacks to the history of surfing. Then, when Kristen receives a cancer diagnosis, the story follows her arduous, lengthy, and ultimately unsuccessful treatment.

In Waves was directed by Phuong Mai Nguyen and stars Will Sharpe and Stephanie Hsu. The film debuts in select theaters on November 27, then arrives on Netflix December 11.
