Big wave surfing is a technical challenge like no other. Navigating lethal lineups, plunging drops, and brutal hold downs — it takes a special type of talent that not even all of the world’s best surfers possess. Nic Von Rupp is one of those skillful few, though, and he often shows it off in pretty spectacular fashion.
However, Von Rupp’s latest video shows off his more utilitarian side. Because, as much as he loves the thrill of massive surf, he’s also equally at home in the barrel. And, as he describes in the caption to his latest YouTube offering, he hadn’t been home in a while.
“After a long time without proper barrels, we jumped on a last-minute strike mission to Desert Point, Indonesia,” he wrote. “Nothing fancy — just raw waves, long tubes, and that classic Indo magic. Sometimes, it feels good to go back to the basics. Just you, your board, and one of the best left-hand barrels in the world.”
