About a decade ago, Nic von Rupp surfed a spot in Northern Scotland that stuck out in his mind. That’s saying a lot, because Nic von Rupp routinely surfs waves that, to most surfers, would be the best of their lives. But this particular wave just had something… different. “I had dreamt about this moment,” he said. “I surfed it ten years ago and all I wanted was to surf it again.”
Like many of the waves that Nic enjoys the most, it’s not a wave that could be considered safe. “It’s such a dangerous wave, such a heavy wave on how it breaks, on how the reef sticks out,” he explained. “If you fall and get hurt you are in the middle of nowhere, far from civilization, where no one will get you. As bad as you want to get the waves of your life, the danger is always in the back of your mind. It was a great day!”
