The Inertia

I’ve given up trying to articulate (to myself) why and how I could be so enamored with the ocean. Saying something poetic in the hopes it sounds and feels profound – while always earnest – can easily sound just flat out kookish. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just that playing in waves can become so deeply personal to an individual that it’s nearly impossible to not feel a little vulnerable and even embarrassed.

Simply put, words have never really done it all justice. They probably never will. Some might sound good. Some might even make a little bit of sense. But they’ll never be as universal as a good photo. A sunset over the ocean, a barrel shot, a shot from inside the barrel during sunset, a pulled back wide shot with a breathtaking landscape that just so happens to be home to a beautifully groomed lineup. These are the things that really turn heads. And the irony of it all is the picture itself invokes the same feeling in all of us…we just can’t find the perfect words to say “it feels like this.” So we point, we gawk, we stare and we daydream.

This video is a pretty good reminder that we all need to go hug our photographer friends today. They say it better than the rest of us will ever be able to.

No words will ever do this justice.

No words will ever do this justice.
