Noa Mizuno is growing up looking at perfect waves. Now, as a student at Punahou High, a private high school on Oahu, he’s making a name for himself by surfing on them incredibly well. Of course, making a name for one’s self among all the other aspiring younger generation that also call surfing’s crown jewel home isn’t easy–and giving up school and focusing entirely on surfing is a difficult temptation to resist.
“I reached that breaking point a few times,” Noa told Surfer Magazine. “I finished my freshman year [of high school], and I told my parents how hard of a time I was having, because I was gone a lot with it being the first year I traveled for surf. My parents luckily gave me a choice after me begging them for three months about home school. I had about a month to decide if I wanted to do it. A lot of parents are pretty strict about school, and I’m really really lucky and grateful that they gave me the chance. But after I really thought about it, I wanted to finish it out, because school is important to me.”
The video you see above came from a school project. Noah was to make a short film about something he loves, and it wasn’t a difficult decision. Over the course of six months, he concentrated on collecting clips to use, and it’s one of the best short films out there.
