Editor’s Note: Ono Grinds is a series sharing the surfing community’s favorite recipes, from childhood staples to training essentials. We begin with Duke Aipa (son of legendary shaper Ben Aipa) and his family’s favorite homemade meal.
Meal time was a trip. So simple, and we loved it. Not the healthiest of choices, and probably wouldn’t make a habit out of it nowadays. But, back then, it was usually a race to finish and bug whoever was still eating. “Hey, you going to eat that or what?” I used to fly my hand around my sister’s plate like a vulture. Drove our mom nuts.
Famous words from my dad were “feed your face, not the floor.” Pretty self-explanatory…
Ingredients:
- Rice (sticky kine)
- Tuna
- Mayonnaise
- A ton of nori furikake and shoyu (or soy sauce for the mainlanders)
Directions:
- Mix it all up.
- That’s it.
Like a Local: Ummm, maybe add Vienna sausages or Spam for good measure. Sometimes throw a few fried eggs on top.
