A few months after we started this website, a surfer named Thomas wrote and published a piece about the experience of being a gay surfer. The topic had only been broached once or twice before in the history of surf publishing, so it was a bold move on his part, and we were thrilled to facilitate that discussion. We want people to be happy and secure in being themselves. We want to be inclusive. That’s it. That’s all. If there’s a legacy we can help impress upon global surf culture, inclusivity would be it.
So when we received an update that Thomas and the team behind his website, gaysurfers.net, were producing a documentary on the topic, we were keen to help spread the word. The trailer above, and the description below summarize their project, which is fittingly called Out in the Lineup. (Clever.) They’re still in the production process, and like many DIY film projects they’re asking for support. So check out their film, and if it’s a story that resonates with you, visit their website for more info.
OUT in the Lineup is a new documentary that examines homosexuality in surfing. It is about people who seek acceptance, happiness, and some really good waves. They are also actively looking for sponsors and funding to complete the making and distribution of the film. Please visit their website to make a donation and everything is appreciated. If you know anyone who might be interested in a larger donation or possible sponsorship, you can have them view the site, or contact them directly at thomas@OUTinthelineup.com. It’s an important story, and they want to be able to tell it to people around the world!
