Point Break holds a special place in the heart of the surfing world. The 1991 film, directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by W. Peter Iliff, is equal parts action thrill ride and meditation on the nature of obsession, identity, and the consequences of living a life without limits. It also has bank robbers wearing president masks, skydiving without a parachute, and a hell of a lot of quotable lines about surfing.
It’s a unique movie, and honestly a shock that it worked as well as it did. Now, as Deadline reports, AMC is developing it into a television series.
The series is being written and executive produced by David Kalstein. Kalstein was a co-executive producer on Amazon’s Butterfly, CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles, ABC’s Quantico and USA Network’s Treadstone. On Treadstone, he also served as co-showrunner.
According to Deadline, the series takes place 35 years after the events of the original film. It focuses on a new heist crew with ties to the ex-presidents, the gang of masked bank robbers helmed by Patrick Swayze in the original film.
Of course, this is not the first time Point Break has been adapted. In 2015, Erickson Core directed the disastrous adaptation starring Edgar Ramirez, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Delroy Lindo and Ray Winstone. The effort was largely panned by critics, and currently sits at 12 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Hopefully this series goes better.
