After opening in August, Surf Snowdonia in the UK has sparked international buzz as the world’s greatest artificial wave. Now, Europe will be getting another premiere wave pool. The newest addition to the Wavegarden empire will be erected in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, reports Surfer Today.
Similarly to Snowdonia, the Portuguese wave pool will be a part of a campground/nature preserve. The site is near the parish of Madalena, reports Surfer Today, and is only 500 meters from the ocean. According to the mayor of Gaia, Eduardo Vitor Rodrigues, the project will cost 10 million euros and take two years to complete. However, Rodrigues believes that it will all be worth it, as artificial wave pools are gaining popularity.
“The equipment will be the result of an excellent coastline,” Rodrigues said, according to Surfer Today. “This is an example of private initiative that will certainly benefit Gaia.”
Along with Portugal, Wavegarden has many other sites in mind including California, Brazil, Australia, Switzerland, France, Spain, Morocco, Dubai and the top priority Austin, Texas.
