Ramzi Boukhiam is on the mend. Six weeks after enduring a knee injury at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, the Moroccan surfer has undergone surgery and appears to be on the road to recovery.

Boukhiam’s unexpected withdrawal from the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach occurred just after the sixth heat of the first round. The heat itself went without incident, with Italo Ferreira winning, Xavier Huxtable coming in second, and Boukhiam bringing up the rear. However, as Ramzi was returning to shore, his leg became stuck in the reef just as a wave broke behind him – resulting in a major knee injury.

“Life doesn’t always make sense and right now, it’s really tough to accept what happened,” wrote Boukhiam in an Instagram post following the accident. “Getting a major injury — again — and during a contest I felt so ready for, just breaks me. With everything I’ve already been through, it honestly hits deep.”

Now, a little over a month after his injury, Boukhiam has undergone surgery to repair the injury. However, as he noted in an Instagram update, this is just the start of his recovery process.

“After six weeks of waiting, my knee was finally ready for surgery,” he wrote. “It ended up being a bit more complicated than expected, but I was ready to face it. I had TTA (Tibial Tuberosity Advancement) surgery today.

“Rehabilitation hasn’t started yet, but the road to recovery begins now. I’ll be sharing updates with you all along the way.”
