Hawai’i is by far one of the most amazing places on the planet. Each island’s rich history and unique culture converges to establish it as one of the most interesting destinations to visit. Oahu stands out as the most visited island every year within the Hawai’ian island chain. The mass influx of visitors on Oahu is most apparent in the winter season, when the surfing world assembles on the North Shore.
Earlier this winter, I had the opportunity to document two of my good friends, Kahana Kalama and Cliff Kapono, as they made their yearly pilgrimage back to The Gathering Place. Kahana and Cliff, two Native Hawai’ians, gave me a glimpse into what Hawai’i really means to them and what it is really like when you overlook the commercialized, artificial aspects perpetuated by the surfing world.
