Arguably the present (meaning, right now) is one of the most interesting crossroads in surf history. Up there with the early stages of the shortboard revolution, we live in a time where wave pools are slowly beginning to crop up all over the world, meaning more people can get consistent surf to get reps in that will likely push the sport (literally) to new heights. Throw in the idea that a single mindblowing maneuver on Instagram can turn an unknown into a well-known virtually overnight and you have yourself the kindling and lighter fluid needed for a revolution in surfing’s progression. All you need are the matches – a crop of up-and-comers with something to prove and ankles made of rubber.
That’s where Rip Curl’s latest iteration of its GromSearch series comes in. This year’s national final was held at BSR Surf Resort in Waco and it was arguably one of the most progressive days in under-18 surfing history.
