Ryan Mack, the award-winning photographer who calls New Jersey home, just released a stunning 80-page photo book called The Shore. For anyone who is a fan of surfing in general, and especially for anyone who is a fan of East Coast surfing, it’s a must-have.
Mack has been shooting photos for years. He has, in fact, been a part of this website many times, and every submission is better than the last. The Shore captures over a decade of weather, surf, and nature along the iconic Jersey Shore, and the 20 images you see here are just a taste of what it has to offer.
“Far from a summer-only snapshot, The Shore is a curated collection of Ryan’s most compelling work showcasing the raw energy of powerful hurricanes and major swells, the quiet beauty of snow-covered winters, and the vibrant warmth of sun-soaked summers,” the book’s summary reads. “From serene seascapes and coastal wildlife to the intensity of surf culture, the book reflects the year-round rhythm of life at the Shore.”
Mack has a very distinctive style. Often shooting directly from the water, he has a penchant for capturing the power of the waves and the grace and emotion of the surfer in a very particular way. It’s an honest one; an intimate take that allows the viewer to see and feel what Mack is seeing and feeling.
“I’ve spent years chasing the light, the storms, and the stories that shape this place,” said Mack. “The Shore is more than a photo book — it’s a tribute to the wild, beautiful stretch of coast that’s defined so much of my life.”
The Shore features a glut of talented surfers like Kelly Slater, Jamie O’Brien, Balaram Stack, Andrew Gesler, Sam Hammer, Tommy Ihnken, Tosh Tudor, Clay Pollioni, and more. Shot at Bay Head, Belmar, Long Beach Island, Long Branch, Manasquan, Mantoloking, Monmouth Beach, Point Pleasant Beach, Sea Girt, Seaside Heights, and Spring Lake, The Shore is an all-encompassing look at life in a wonderful little sliver of the surfing world.
