Waves4Water is a pretty incredible group. A few years ago, they teamed up with Hurley International to build a program made up of volunteers called Clean Water Couriers. The premise is simple: surfers on surf trips in developing countries carry water filters with them in their luggage, then distribute them in villages that need clean water. They’ve developed a few different filters, ranging from tiny ones that can be carried by one person to large ceramic filters that provide clean water to entire villages.
Waves4Water teamed up with surfer Ulu Napeahi to take filters to his family in rural Hawaii. Ulu has an interesting story – when he was 16, he was hammered by a shark on both legs at Pohoiki, Big Island, he came back stronger than ever. Now he’s helping out at home, bringing clean water to his house and his family. “This is my house,” Ulu says. “No electricity, no running water… we don’t have the best things in the world, but my family makes it a really loving environment, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
