The Inertia

The timing is entirely too perfect. Just ahead of Shark Week, competition was halted today at the J-Bay Open in South Africa after a shark breached less than 100 yards from the lineup. “They saw it twice, actually,” said the WSL’s Kieren Perrow. “The boat went over immediately and a couple of skis to confirm. The heat was put on hold (and) we’ve made a decision that we’re not going to restart again today.”

A stacked heat that included Jordy Smith, Filipe Toledo and Julian Wilson, was stopped mid-clock as WSL officials have no stomach for taking chances at Jeffreys Bay, the site of Mick Fanning’s now world-famous run-in with a shark two years ago. The heat will be continued when competition resumes.

And why ruin a perfect day of competition? Smith notched a pefect heat with a pair of tens, and his round four heat partners, Toledo and Wilson, both found perfect 10s in the competition as well. John John Florence also notched one in his heat 2 matchup.
