The Inertia

Shark warnings were issued at multiple Honolulu area beaches over the weekend. The development came after a man’s gruesome run-in with one of the ocean predators, followed by a sighting at a popular surf break.

The first incident occurred at Cromwell’s beach, located near near Diamond Head on the south shore of Oahu. As sources told KHON 2, a man had swam or paddled out on a surfboard (there was not confirmation either way) from Cromwell’s and was approaching Kaikoo when he was bitten near the channel at Hale Mano. He was able to paddle back to shore on his own, where a bystander called 911.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responded around 6:30 a.m., as Hawaii News Now reports. When they arrived, they found a 38-year-old man with “serious injuries to his lower extremities.” EMS administered lifesaving treatment, then took him to a hospital.

In the aftermath of the rescue, a six- to eight-foot shark was spotted in the area, leading Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguards to post shark warning signs at Cromwell’s.

However, that was not the end of shark activity that day. More warning signs were posted at Magic Island in Honolulu, after two “aggressive” eight-foot sharks were spotted near the surf break Ala Moana Bowls.
