The Inertia

Damn. Réunion Island is beautiful. It’s easy to imagine this being a tough place to leave for any surf-obsessed human. Paradise, some would say.

Nonetheless, after 17 years of living here, Jorgann Couzinet was faced with the decision to leave. His home had gone from being a place he could surf the best waves every day to an island shut down by the constant threat of shark attacks. Now he lives in St. Gilles Les Hauts, France and travels full time, competing on the QS. But outside of contest results, mentions of his name tend to be attached to those roots on Réunion, a place he speaks passionately about.

Couzinet got his chance to return home during a break from competition and naturally, he surfed when and where he could. The island isn’t under 365-day shutdown but surfing its best waves often isn’t an option. So here’s what five days of surfing Réunion Island actually looks like…plus a lot of imagery that shows just how beautiful this place is.
