The Inertia

Is it just me, or has NBC been on point with its Olympics coverage? All the short biopic packages they coordinate just before event time to get you hooked on an athlete and continue to root for them have been pretty successful in my book. They keep me watching. And I’m aware that’s the function of them, but I love them all the same.

Another reason the network runs these little spots is to give viewers a taste of the culture of the city. Part of that for Rio, apparently, is surfing.

So in a genre-bending moment in Olympics coverage, NBC got winter Olympic gold medalist Shaun White to catch a few waves for the camera with former NFL linebacker Dhani Jones.

Is this a shameless plug trying to subconsciously remind us that NBC will also offer full coverage of the Winter Olympics? Probably. Is the surfing in this clip even that great? No. But we’ll keep watching. Keep it coming NBC.

NBC doesn’t allow us to directly embed their content, so to see the video in its entirety you’ll have to click here. But it’s definitely worth a watch.
