Some men spit in the face of fear. Others pee on it. A video of a man peeing into the lineup at Shipstern Bluff has been making the rounds online, as part of a campaign to garner an entry into an Instagram account that reposts scenic pisses – and possibly even contend for the title “Piss of the Year.”.
The Instagram account “Scenic Pisses” is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. The page, sponsored by the alcohol brand Friday Beers, has amassed 1.5 million followers by reposting videos of adventurers urinating in a variety of wildly spectacular vistas. Dozens of videos show primarily men unzipping and releasing a cathartic stream off of mountains, cliffs, and at least one hang glider. The brand also holds a yearly competition with a bracket voted on by fans to determine the “Piss of the Year.”
However, there appears to be a glaring omission among the entries. Where are all the surfing scenic pisses? We’ve been peeing in our wetsuits in the midst of breathtaking scenery since the dawn of the sport, and yet somehow the micturitional exploits of the surfing community have gone unrecognized.
Thankfully, one brave wanderer has sought to right that wrong. The video starts mid-stream with videographer Hugh Mitchell peeing off a boat and into the waters near Shipstern Bluff. The gesture is a bold act of defiance to the famed Tasmanian wave, which responds by immediately proving why it’s earned such a fearsome reputation. The camera tilts up and we see surfer Mikey Brennan screaming across the face of a shifting slab, that promptly obliterates him in an explosion of whitewash.
It’s certainly a scene that seems worthy of entry, and possibly even a POTY contender. To achieve that end, Brennan has been reposting it daily to the succinctly titled Instagram account get_this_on_scenic_pisses. The campaign has now entered day seven, and even earned a nod from prolific big-wave videographer Tim Bonython, who reposted the video to his own Instagram account without comment.
We wish them godspeed in their pursuit. And also legitimately hope Mikey is okay.
