Stanley Eric Norman’s favorite exclamation is “BAM!” It’s appropriate. The surfing, skating, spear-fishing thirteen-year-old from Cornwall lives an enviable life, even by frothy grom standards, hence the need for a phrase to pepper excitement and energy throughout while recanting his exploits.
“I pulled into a barrel and it was just, like, BAM!”
“I shot a fish, like, BAM!”
“We were catching waves back and forth, like, BAM BAM BAM!”
These are all phrases you’ll come across in Onterre Films’ biopic STAN – A film about Stanley Eric Norman.
Stan is a funny kid from the Cornish town of Bude. He has a pug named Jessie (that also, kind of narrates the film), and two brothers, one older and one younger. The film follows Stan’s exploits at home and adventures around the world, including trips to France, Australia, Hawaii, and Ireland. Like I said, enviable life.
Stan spends a considerable amount of time telling stories about his adventures, which are a total crack up. To see the world through a grom’s eyes, from the things he notices while traveling to the unadulterated excitement, is amazing.
“The flight was boring,” Stan says of his travel to Australia, “and I was in the middle of the thing, so I wasn’t able to sleep because fat people kept wanting to get past me to go to the bathroom,” he says. No filter.
He also brings up the nude beaches in France. “They were brilliant… except for the old people.” Classic.
Stan’s definitely on the up and up. He dreams of soon dominating the Pro Juniors, then the ‘QS, and ultimately qualifying for the World Tour. But for now, he’s just a grom who’s psyched to get in the water as much as possible.
