Pipe and winter go together like Kelly and supermodel girlfriends. They’re just two things that we automatically associate with one another inside the the surf world. Labor Day marks the ceremonial end to summer. September 23rd is the official onset of shorter days with the fall equinox. And yes, while fall is a glorious season of combo swells, it’s also the time we officially turn our attention to winter. That means maxed out Pipe and Backdoor are getting closer and closer each day. It means Jamie O’Brien will inevitably do something we’ve never seen before. It means Thanksgiving on the North Shore. It means all these things, but mostly it signifies barrel after spitting barrel at our most holy wave.
