The Inertia

Marquette, Michigan, where the winters are brutal and the summers are muggy. But at least there’s waves. This well-done piece of film from Camp4 Collective illustrates that point in the best way possible.

The local wave rider, known only as “Surfer Dan,” (not Lieutenant Dan but a bit of a doppelgänger), stars in this burly-cold look at Midwestern surfing and why the suffering is worth it. It’s worth it mostly because it gives us purpose. And that’s really what riding waves is about–it unites the grumpy and the downtrodden with the giddy and uplifted to create a beautiful mess that we’re all lucky to be part of.
