A surfer was killed today on Australia’s Gold Coast at Greenmount Beach by an apparent shark attack just below Snapper Rocks – part of the famed Super Bank. The surfer was found face down and rescued by several others in the water at the time. Witnesses told police and media that the man – whose age has varied between late 40s to early 60s in reports – had massive wounds to his legs and was most likely already dead in the water.
The Gold Coast’s chief lifeguard Warren Young confirmed that theory to reporters, telling them that the man was rescued by other surfers but his wounds were so extreme “he was probably deceased” well before he was brought to shore.
The last reported fatal shark attack off the Gold Coast – an area protected by shark netting and drum lines – was in 1958.
This is eastern Australia’s third fatal attack this winter. A 36-year-old spear fisherman reportedly perished near Fraser Island in July and a 60-year-old surfer died in June when he was bitten near Kingscliff south of the Gold Coast.
