The Inertia

Although J-Bay had sort of sleepy start, it seems we’ve finally found what we’ve been looking for. The usual suspects shined and there were a few upsets here and there, too, including hometown hero, Jordy Smith, who took an early bow in Round 2. But when it came to competition, one thing was for certain: The Brazilian storm has been on an absolute tear—notably from the goofyfooters.

Heat 5: Wiggolly Dantas vs. Joel Parkinson

Being a rookie and taking down one of the best surfers to ever surf J-Bay is an incredible feat. Joel Parkinson is a two-time champion out at J-Bay—and his performance in Round 2 made clear he was fully capable of securing a third win—but it was Brazilan Wiggolly Dantas who got the upper hand.

Heat 6: Adriano de Souza vs. Dane Reynolds

Yes, Adriano is our current world leader. And yes, Dane Reynolds is just a wild card. But Dane Reynolds is Dane Reynolds. He’s long been regarded as the best free surfer in the world, and he’s still capable of some amazing things. Just look at his latest edit, not to mention what he did to Filipe Toledo and Adam Melling in Round 1.

Heat 8: Gabriel Medina vs. Matt Wilkinson

Gabriel’s had an extremely sleepy start to 2015, but the World Champion came from under his veil during his Round 3 matchup with Matt Wilkinson. And anyone who’s been watching Wilko around J-Bay knows he’s been a standout every time he enters the lineup. Gabriel posted a near-perfect heat of 19.07 points. He must’ve had a Red Bull before his heat, because the guy grew wings and took to the air just like he did last year. I think he’s finally found his footing. Watch out for Gabriel. He’s back.

Heat 12: Alejo Muniz vs. Filipe Toledo

Alejo has been the one surfer to standout in my eyes this year in South Africa. After winning the Ballito Pro in KwaDukuza, he’s used his underdog position as an injury replacement and continued his fiery momentum, defeating Taj Burrow in Round 2 and world No. 2, Filipe Toledo, in Round 3. Watch out for this guy. He’s looking on point and in easy position to requalify for the 2016 WCT.
