Professional surfing commentators take a lot of flak. Everyone loves to hate on the guys in the booth, and sometimes, it’s for good reason. But they’ve got a tough job, when you think about it–surfing’s inherent lulls make for a whole lot of gaps that need to filled. Granted, sometimes they fill it with some pretty odd stuff, and sometimes they might be a little bit repetitive, and sometimes Strider shouldn’t wear a collared shirt in the channel, and sometimes Turpel should find a different way to say “back to the power source”, but hey, there’s a fault in everything, if you look hard enough.
The Wapaah guy, however, has no faults. He is firmly embedded in surfing’s history books as the perfect example of what non-surfers think of when they think of surfers. And when someone remixed a few of Owen Wright’s waves to his incredible whatever-you-want-to-call-it… well, it’s pretty much bang on. Surely we can all agree that the Wapaah guy would be a fantastic addition to the booth.
