Today the United States Men’s National Soccer Team faces off against Belgium in their first elimination round match of the 2014 World Cup, and while soccer fans sit anxiously awaiting the start of the match, one question no one seems to be asking themselves is: which country would have the upper hand in a World Cup of Surfing? For those of you waving your arms, blowing a whistle and raising a yellow card because Belgium doesn’t have waves, we beg to differ. Belgium does in fact have waves, and by the looks of it there’s potential for some damn good ones. When you take into consideration that Belgium has a coastline of 42 miles (versus the United States’ 12,300), and that surfers must deal with the unpredictable and often tumultuous North Sea, you gain a new respect for their tenacity. Still, tenacity isn’t everything and the United States would definitely be a favorite in a world cup of surfing. All things considered, take a look at the following videos, and be sure to tune in for the game this afternoon at 1:00 PM PST.

Every year Surfing America hosts the USA Surfing Championships, and is responsible for selecting the official USA Surf team. Here are some highlights of an event they put on at Steamer Lane early last year. Americans surfing in America. It doesn’t get more American than that.
