The Inertia

As of 7:30 a.m. this morning, the WSL Finals are officially on Yellow Alert. In other words, anyone who wants to be on the sand when the competition begins has 24 hours to get there before, in all likelihood, the contest starts Thursday morning.

“We’re going on Yellow Alert for a possible start in the next 24 hours,” said Jessi Miley-Dyer of the WSL. “Right now it looks like we’ve got great waves on Thursday and Friday on the forecast, but we do have this storm with the potential for onshore winds for Friday. Having said that, that’s why we’re going on Yellow Alert. We know we’re going to get good waves and we could be on.”

With a few hours of breathing room before the event starts, it’s probably a good time to get caught up on how the surfing at Lower Trestles will be scored. As former head judge Richie Porta explains above, the home of high performance surfing will push athletes to produce a variety of maneuvers on the most critical sections of each wave. Combinations of maneuvers also score high, as do airs, of course. Click play above and follow along as Richie takes us through the scoring of some of last year’s top rides at Trestles.
