The Inertia

I believe that we all have a purpose to fulfill and a passion to chase during our time on this planet. And after 15 years in the workforce I hit my tipping point. I realized that my years of working to simply collect a paycheck weren’t the best use of my time. Something boiled inside of me to redirect my lifestyle, my path, and to contribute in a meaningful way to others. Giving up financial security to be free to pursue that purpose was one of the toughest decisions in my life. Some called me stupid. Others called me crazy. But for me the decision never made more sense. I finally realized my life is full and rich when I engage both my passion and my purpose.

Over the years I found myself most enthralled when volunteering opportunities presented themselves and I could participate. I was happiest picking up trash at beach clean-ups, feeding malnourished horses at rescue shelters and building schools in rural Nepal. These actions were significant and relevant to my life and my purpose. Meanwhile, my love for surfing was ignited in 1996 when my parents decided to split ways. The ocean quickly became my personal refuge to deal with an all too sudden upside down world. Nearly 20 years later I’ve never felt more blessed to enjoy the ocean’s depth.

3,000 Waves was born to raise money to fight cancer through that love of surfing, fulfilling both a passion and a purpose. The objective is simple: surf 3,000 waves in 30 days in an effort to raise $100,000. And in those 30 days I’ll cover 750 miles of California coastline in a rented RV, starting in San Francisco and ending in San Diego, connecting with local cancer fighting non-profits and the surf communities there along the way.

I’m a firm believer that one gets out of life what one puts into life. And my hope is that others in the community can support the same cause. Even the smallest amount could help us reach our goal of $100,000.

Editor’s Note: 100% of funds donated go directly to the registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization Stupid Cancer, specializing in supporting the young adult cancer community.
