The Inertia

“Go Skateboarding Day” is supposed to be a time to celebrate the sport, and eco-friendly transportation. But in Brazil this week, it turned into a bit of a nightmare as a driver of a black Ford SUV plowed through a large crowd of skaters in São Paulo who were celebrating the occasion.

Multiple people were knocked down, hit and generally scared shitless in the streets. One person suffered a broken leg. No one was killed, thankfully. You can see some of the skaters go street on the car, pummeling it with boards while trying to stop the driver as he weaves through the crowd with a shattered window. No word yet on the driver’s POV as he/she has disappeared into the the São Paulo netherworld.

Officials in Brazil moved the event to Sunday, since the official date fell on a work day (June 21). There were some estimates that 20,000 participated (not confirmed). “Lots of people were running, some guys tried to smash the car, of course. But a lot of people just ran trying to protect themselves while the guy zigzagged trying to hit the crowd,” said Ezequiel Magalhães, who was on hand to see the carnage.

As mentioned, the driver has apparently not been aprehended so that side of the story hasn’t been detailed. The mob mentality definitely took over once the melee started.
