The Inertia

There’s a fairly universal understanding amongst surfers of what the perfect wave looks like. Places like Desert Point and J-Bay generally come to mind — starting from a clear and reliable peak then peeling in one direction, possibly for miles. Heck, Kelly Slater devoted years to just building one himself. And again, we all more or less agree his creation is the notebook-doodle-inducing vision of perfection.

The Right is not perfect. It’s the opposite of perfect. You can get barreled, sure, but not without escaping the kind of lip that would leave a load hanging in most surfers’ wetsuits. These three minutes of Ross Clarke Jones, Jake Osman, Brad Norris, and Zac Haynes taking on the West Oz mutant are a reminder that for some guys, it’s not about finding perfection at all. Because maybe perfection is boring.
