The Inertia

I’ll admit it. I’m a sucker for Nathan Oldfield films. The first I came across was The Heart & the Sea, and to this day I make a habit of watching it on my phone or computer on flights exceeding six hours. Visually Oldfield’s films are stunning. The surfing is on point. But the thread that binds in his films is the notion that surfing is a global phenomenon and that the joy experienced riding a wave in one part of the world is the same elsewhere.

Oldfield just dropped the trailer for his latest project, The Church of the Open Sky, and from the looks of it the film has the same character of his past projects. The full-length film is set to premiere in May, but for now, we’ll settle for this little teaser. And here’s some additional info from the director himself:

“‘The Church of the Open Sky’ is the latest feature-length release from award winning independent Australian filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, creator of ‘Lines From A Poem’, ‘Seaworthy’, ‘The Heart & The Sea’ and ‘Gathering’.

“Shot on location in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka, the film features Dave Rastovich, Lauren Lindsey Hill, Tom Wegener, Belinda Baggs, CJ Nelson, Alex Knost, Johnny Abegg, Neal Purchase Jr, Jasson Salisbury, Devon Howard and many others.

“‘The Church of the Open Sky’ is a luscious visual love poem that explores gratefully lived surfing journeys. It is a sea soaked celebration of the exquisite preciousness of being alive.

“This film is an inspired and endearing representation of the surfing experience, where all participants are worthy and welcomed – to learn, play and grow together – in inclusive, sacred playgrounds beneath ‘The Church of the Open Sky’.”
