The Inertia

Over the last year-and-a-half, I have produced a six-part web-series called “J,” based on my small hometown of Jeffery’s Bay in the Eastern Cape. Growing up in Jeffery’s Bay has been a great privilege for me and I have managed to foster great friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. My hope is that “J” will allow others to experience Jeffreys Bay through the eyes of a local and see what makes this special town so unique.

From the history of JBay to the local calamari industry, mountain biking, and more, there is a lot about JBay that most people aren’t aware of. The JBU Supertrial is an iconic event in surfing, for example, with a side to it that’s special and unique to JBay. It provides South African surfers the opportunity to showcase their ability by surfing one of the best waves in the world, as well as a chance to win a wildcard into the Corona Jbay Open (the only Championship Tour event in South Africa). This event is one of the highlights of the year for South African surfers, as well as the Jbay locals. The 2017 JBU Supertrial was one to take note of as one of the most exciting trial events ever held, with an epic 7-meter open ocean swell generated by one of the biggest storms to hit the coastline of South Africa in 30 years. This episode provides you with the chance to see the likes of Michael February, Dale Staples, David van Zyl, Steven Sawyer, Matthew McGillivray and myself battling it out on some of the biggest waves of the year.
