The Inertia

In the world of wave photography, a few names stand out. Danny Sepkowski’s is one them. It’s a tough gig to break into–the nature of the game is that the image is the star–but there are many who throw their hats in the ring.

Sepkowski was born in Washington, but, shortly after he was born, moved to Hawaii after his father was stationed there. It changed the course of his life forever. It was in high school that the first spark of a fire was lit. After he found an underwater disposable camera, he took it into the shorebreak and found that he had both a talent and a passion for it. He was already testing his mettle in bigger surf, and was gaining an understanding of how waves worked and what they were going to do. Soon, photography became a dominant force in his life.

Now, he makes his living behind the lens, traveling the world working for publications like Nat Geo, the Smithsonian, and Canon Magazine. The film above is a portrait of a working photographer, directed by Reno-Oner Champ and narrated perfectly by Puakea Nogelmeier.
