The Inertia

It’s April. This isn’t the time of year when our attention is turned to the North Shore, which is probably how a lot of people on Oahu prefer life to be. Some would say, in fact, that if you truly want to score at a place like Pipe and Backdoor (and don’t need the photo op to prove it), then show up during the fringe months when the crowds are minuscule and the ocean hands out a decent day or two.

If you were ever curious what a day at such a place might look like when every pro on the planet isn’t hard at work, convening on one wave, here’s your chance to see. Koa Rothman, vlog star extraordinaire, apparently doesn’t take breaks from multiple-session days just because the waves aren’t perfect. It’s actually quite impressive to see how much and how often the guy makes a point to get in the water with less-than-stellar conditions until he’s finally rewarded with a gem or two. And as you can see, Pipe and Backdoor look like they’re on an entirely different planet from what we see in the thick of the winter.
