If you ask Jamie O’Brien, apparently everybody in the eighties surfed Pipe and Backdoor decked out in neon aloha shirts and stood atop retro twin fins. Although technically, they probably weren’t called “retro” back in then, more like just “fishes.” But you catch our drift here. We’ve also learned, according to J.O.B. and his crew, that Red Bull was a thing on the North Shore during the best decade ever.
Or maybe what we’ve really learned here is that June on the North Shore must be devestatingly boring, which is hilarious and entertaining for the rest of the surf world. O’Brien and crew took a few pages off the Hot Tub Time Machine script and recreated their own North Shore Shred edition where the big time travel celebration is an excuse to take to Pipe and Backdoor on some (now) seriously retro shapes. They do make it look fun with all those flat, stubby, thick pieces of foam under their feet. You can skip to the 7:45 mark to for the surfing unless you want to see Jamie playing golf poorly.
