There are a lot of great things about surfing. And part of the beauty of it all is that surfing is so great for wildly different reasons to wildly different people. And nobody has the right or wrong way to love it all. For some it’s just fun and there’s nothing more to it. No need for deeper meaning. No search for a bigger purpose.
Meanwhile, there are plenty of devoted surfers who feel a communion with something divine when they stand on top of water. Shawn Zappo clearly made this story for people from that group. A Hare Krsna monk, a theology and religions major, and lover of our culture, he’s the self-proclaimed seeker of the “soul” of surfing. You can’t watch this without feeling plenty of soul.
“Communing with nature, dancing in the aquatic realm, immersed in the womb of Planet Earth, I have found the purest of joy while surfing.”
