The Inertia

Tim Bonython’s latest video begins in the pre-dawn moments at Botany Bay, Sydney. The bay is where Captain James Cook first landed in Australia in 1770, beginning the British colonization of the continent. Later on, the name became synonymous with the New South Wales penal colony. It is a place that is steeped in Australian history, for better and worse.

Tim’s destination, Cape Solander, has an equally conflicted past. The break used to be known as “Ours,” so named by the Maroubra-based surf gang the Bra Boys. The group had decided the wave belonged to them, and would attack anyone who wanted to tempt fate at the slab. Even with the Bra Boys gone, now, the break still poses significant danger to any that choose to face it. As a result, it was the original venue for Red Bull’s aptly-named “Cape Fear” event.

It is also Tim Bonython favorite slab in Sydney. It’s a spot he’s returned to again and again, and the footage he captured this time is all you need to know why.
