Not everybody on the globe can easily pinpoint their dream – a pursuit or a goal that gives each day purpose. Even fewer people are brave enough to declare that dream and passionately run it down. Tom Butler is a part of that small group.
Big Wave Tom’s dream is to work his way onto the WSL’s Big Wave Tour, and he’s going to accomplish that by being one of Europe’s best big wave surfers. While you might not think of the UK as a breeding ground for surfing’s hellmen, Butler is taking advantage of the region’s unique layout. Access to some of the heaviest and meanest waves on the planet is usually just a short trip away. Whether it’s driving through Portgual or Spain, hopping over to Ireland, or wherever his heart desires, Butler has it covered.
“It’s a great location, here in the UK,” he says. “I can jump in my van with the rest of my equipment, jet ski or my boards. Load the van up and I can get anywhere on the continent.”
For a guy on call 365 days a year that’s not a horrible game plan.
