Lighting’s not something anyone ever actually worries about when they’re surfing. Sharks, maybe. Neck-breakingly shallow reef, possibly. But lightning? No. A surfer from Belgium, however, died when he was struck by lightning off Canggu Beach on November 5th, at just after 2 pm.
Denis Andre Dasoul, a 34-year-old from Belgium, was surfing in front of the Pantai Batu Bolong Temple on Batu Bolong Beach when he was hit by a bolt of lightning and killed. According to RadarBali.com, he was in the middle of a surf lesson when the instructor called it off due to the storm that quickly descended on the area. It’s not clear whether he stayed out despite the instructor’s wishes or if he was paddling back in at the time.
After he was hit, locals pulled him from the water and called a Canggu-based ambulance. According to witnesses on-scene, “is chest was blue, presumably from burns suffered in the accident.” The instructor was also hit, but only had burns on his left leg.
We’ll have more on this story as it develops.
