The Coronavirus has changed a lot of things in this world. Possibly the very least important of those things is surfing, but it has really changed surfing. Not the actual physical act of it, of course— sliding on a wave will always be just sliding on a wave — but pro surfing contests in particular have dramatically changed. There are workarounds for everything, especially in this day and age, and the World Surf League has decided that the show must go on. The Triple Crown of Surfing has gone digital.
It’s a simple concept: the best surfers from around the world are sitting in Hawaii for a month, as are a plethora of camera people, so surfers have four weeks to stack their best clips and send them in for submission.
“I think the best surfing will win and the best surfer of all the spots will win, which is not necessarily always true in the Triple Crown,” Kelly Slater told the World Surf League. “Obviously, it probably has been in many years, but also there’s a lot of luck involved. But when you have 4 weeks to surf all the best spots on the best days, get the best waves and film it, the best surfing it’s gonna pay out.”
The digital Triple Crown ends on January 19, so there are still a few days in the waiting period, but above are the top 5 highest scoring rides from this week.
