A minute is a long time to be on a wave. It’s probably even fair to say most surfers don’t spend a full minute standing on top of their surfboard when combining every single wave of a single session. And if you measure your success in surfing by that metric and that metric only, it might be the most inefficient activity to ever exist. We drive, we sit on the beach, in the parking lot, or on a cliff staring at waves and assessing conditions. We get on airplanes and fly to places where we just might find ourselves paddling into really great waves. We sit in the ocean for hours on end, patiently waiting in between sets of waves for a handful that come our way. And when we do get to our feet it’s not like we stay there for more than a few seconds at a time, on average.
A minute-long ride, though? That sorta stuff is reserved for a day at the Surf Ranch, maybe a trip to Namibia for an Octotube if you’re a world-class talent (technically, that was two minutes), or a cruisy, waist-high peeler atop a log. At best the Average Joe’s longest rides are probably going to be those cruisy longboard waves. Except for this guy who took a fun-looking set wave at Impossibles and made it look…fun. No huge gouges. This wouldn’t make the cut on any high-performance edits from a pro’s sojourn in Bali, but it sure does look like one he’s going to remember.
Oh, and yes, technically it’s 57 seconds. He earned the round-up.
