The Inertia

Portugal’s been having a good winter. First there was the Nazaré Big Wave Challenge, where Lucas Chianca and Maya Gabeira won it all on waves the size of office buildings. Later on, we saw some heavy surf at Coxos, that reminded os of why Ericeira is the surfing capital of Portugal. Soon, we’ll also see some action in Carcavelos, the setting for the tube-riding contest Capitulo Perfeito.

However, today we turn our eye to the aptly-named Supertubos, which has been producing clip after clip lately. “This day the conditions were incredible,” writes Barena Film and Sports in the caption of its most recent video. “Solid waves of one and a half meters were pounding the coast, forming perfect tubes. The winds were aligned, creating almost perfect conditions.” You might even say that the tubes were “super.”

Of course, when any famous wave starts to pop off, you’re bound to see a horde of itinerant pros descend upon it, and this day was no different. The wave played host to Italo Ferreira, Clay Marzo and Frederico Morais, along with a regular assortment of local rippers. Though they’re all absolutely tearing it up, special mention goes to Clay for surfing without a wetsuit, like an insane person.
