The Inertia

Building a wave pool in Oahu definitely raised a few eyebrows when it was first announced, but since then a slew of pros have showed up to tear up The Lineup at Wai Kai, and the results are hard to argue with. The 100-foot-wide pool uses Citywave technology to create a deep-water standing wave. The ride is a bit more like a river wave than Surf Loch or KSWC pools, and also happens to be perfect for the type of progressive maneuvers surf YouTuber Jacob Szekely is known for, as seen in his latest YouTube offering.

For those who prefer natural waves to man-made creations, Szekely immediately followed up the Wai Kai trip with a tour of Oahu’s North Shore. First he was joined by Ben Gravy at Velzyland. Then, when Sunset started firing, he made a beeline to join a horde of pros descending on the beach. “All the world tour guys are out,” said Szekely as he loaded up his SUV for round two. “The waves picked up a ton, swell doubled in size in the last few hours. Sunset’s huge, like 20-foot faces.” He was joined by Jake Marshall to see what the hype was all about. The footage speaks for itself.
