For the last few days, one of the most interesting surfing events on earth has been taking place. It's the Red Bull Qiantang Surfing Shootout in Hangzhou, China.

Red Bull’s tidal bore event is one of the most interesting surfing contests there is–but it’s never been all that easy to watch.

The Inertia

For the last few days, one of the most interesting surfing events on earth has been taking place. It’s the Red Bull Qiantang Surfing Shootout in Hangzhou, China.

For those that haven’t seen it–and there can’t be many–the Qiantang Shootout is held on on a wave known as the Silver Dragon. A tidal surge from the East China Sea, the wave runs through the Qiantang River all the way to Hangzhou Bay. Not only is it immensely powerful, but the Silver Dragon is also unusually big for a tidal bore–up to 9 meters (around 30 feet), according to the press release.

The event itself is as unique as the wave. Four two-man teams compete against each other for a prize purse of $31,000.

The last two days have seen the qualifying rounds run their course. It’s now down to Team Hawaii with Jamie O’Brien and Cheyne Magnussen and Team Australia with Dean “Dingo” Morrison and Koby Abberton.
