The biggest moment of the Trestles Pro men’s final came just moments into the heat. The broadcast had only just cut away from Bettylou Sakura Johnson taking a post-win victory lap on a Jet Ski, when Yago Dora came flying in from stage left. The move was so sudden, so dramatic, that even the announcers were taken by surprise, just trying to mentally process what the hell was actually going down in front of them.
Dora’s lofty punt, full rotation, and 9.53 score set the tone for the rest of the heat. Of course, Kanoa Igarashi put up a valiant effort, weaving in a series of ferocious snaps and even a Kerrupt of his own to prove that Yago wasn’t the only competitor in the water capable of flight. In the end though, Kanoa was just totally outgunned by a relentless aerial assault – and it all started here.
Now that the tour is headed back to Dora’s home shores of Brazil, one can only imagine what is in store for stop nine.
